Warmle Day 1649: the clue row A O K T R with R in yellow above five empty rows, an alphabetical keyboard and a warmth meter reading Freezing

Warmle turns Wordle's yellow into warmer and colder. Each letter of your guess turns green if it is right, yellow if it is within three letters of the right one in the alphabet, and grey if it is further away. The daily word is four to seven letters, with spaces on either side to fill the row.

About Warmle

Warmle looks like Wordle at first: a grid of five-letter rows and a keyboard laid out from A to Z. The difference is what the colours mean. Green is the right letter in that position. Yellow means the letter in that position is wrong but close, within three letters alphabetically, so a yellow M means the answer there is somewhere from J to P. Grey means it is more than three away. A warmth meter under the keyboard, from Freezing upward, shows how close your guesses are getting.

The secret word can be four to seven letters long, with spaces on the left or right, so a space is itself something you may have to place. Each day's puzzle starts with a clue row already filled in; on Day 1649 it was AOKTR with a yellow R. Bonus games called Super Warmle and Super Warmle PLUS narrow yellow to two and then one letter.

Beyond the daily, an Unlimited mode gives more words, a calendar lets you go back to earlier days, and you can watch other players' solutions live or as replays once you have solved the puzzle yourself. The game credits Mike Elliott, coded by keldor.

How to play Warmle

  1. Open warmle.org and choose Daily.
  2. Look at the clue row already filled in for today.
  3. Type a guess, using spaces where the word may be shorter than the row, and press Enter.
  4. Read each letter: green is right, yellow is within three letters alphabetically, grey is further away.
  5. Narrow each position down alphabetically until the whole word turns green.

Tips

  • Treat each position as a number line: a yellow tells you a range of seven letters, a grey rules out a range.
  • Pick guess letters spaced about seven apart in the alphabet, such as D, K, R and Y, to cover ground fast.
  • Remember the word may be four to seven letters; spaces at the ends are part of the answer.
  • Watch the warmth meter to see whether a guess got you closer overall.
