Fibble's Day 1649 board: nine empty rows under a first guess, CARGO, with a flag beside each row to mark the lie

Fibble is a Wordle variant where every row of feedback contains exactly one lie: one tile shows the wrong colour. You get nine guesses at the day's five-letter word, and the lies fall in the same places for every player. It is free in the browser, with an unlimited mode next to the numbered daily.

About Fibble

Fibble was designed by K & R Garfield and coded by keldor, who also coded the Wordle variants Double-Dabble, Warmle and Shuntle. Its code is based on a fork of hello wordl, and its source sits on GitHub, where the project began in March 2022.

The rules start as in Wordle: green for the right letter in the right spot, yellow for a right letter in the wrong spot, grey for a letter not in the word. The twist is that one tile in every row lies. To make up for it you have nine rows instead of six, and the game gives you tools to keep track: a flag beside each row to mark the tile you think is the lie, and a long press or right click to mark tiles you know are true. A setting can also show lie counts for the current guess.

The daily is numbered, so you can compare results with friends, and since the lies sit in the same positions for everyone the day's board is the same puzzle for all. An Unlimited mode lets you play more, and an optional replay feature lets you watch other players' solutions after you have solved the day's word.

It suits Wordle players who want a slower, more careful game, and those who liked Lirdle's idea of a lying clue.

How to play Fibble

  1. Type a five-letter word and press Enter.
  2. Read the colours: green is right letter, right spot; yellow is right letter, wrong spot; grey is not in the word.
  3. Remember that exactly one tile in each row is lying about its colour.
  4. Flag the tile you think is the lie, and long-press or right-click tiles you know are true.
  5. Find the word within nine guesses.

Tips

  • Compare rows: a tile that contradicts what two other rows say is a good candidate for the lie.
  • Repeat a letter in the same spot in two guesses to test whether its colour was the lie.
  • Turn on lie counts in Settings if you want help while learning.
