Breadle is a daily word game from the Daily Bread Food Pantry in which the answer is always about food, drink or the pantry. Guess the word in six tries with coloured tile hints. New Breadle uses words of four to six letters; Breadle Classic sticks to five.

About Breadle

Breadle is a daily word game with a food theme, made by the Daily Bread Food Pantry, a charity that has served the Greater Danbury area of Connecticut since 1984. The rules follow Wordle: guess a hidden word in six tries, with each tile turning green for a right letter in the right place, yellow for a right letter in the wrong place, and grey for a letter not in the word.

The twist is the word list. Every answer is tied to food, drink or the pantry: ingredients, dishes, brands and kitchen words. There are two versions to choose from. New Breadle uses answers of four to six letters, so the length is a clue in itself, while Breadle Classic keeps to the familiar five letters. Both use the same answer for every player on a given day and change at local midnight.

Because the pool is food and drink, American spellings, brand names, place names and plurals can all turn up, which keeps the guessing a little wider than a plain dictionary game. The pantry also sells a Breadle mug, with proceeds supporting its work, but playing the game itself is free and needs no account.

It suits Wordle players who want a themed list and like the idea that the game comes from a community food charity.

How to play Breadle

  1. Choose New Breadle or Breadle Classic.
  2. Type a word that fits the grid and press enter.
  3. Use the tile colours to see which letters are right, misplaced or absent.
  4. Find the food or drink word within six guesses.

Tips

  • Brand names, place names and plurals can be answers, so think beyond everyday vocabulary.
  • Spellings are mostly American, for example color and donut.
  • In New Breadle the grid length tells you the word has four, five or six letters before you start.
