Byrdle, the choral word guessing game

Byrdle is a daily word game for choir singers and church music fans. Each day there is one hidden five-letter word with a choral theme, and you have six tries to find it, with coloured tiles showing which letters are right and where.

About Byrdle

Byrdle follows the Wordle format with a choral word list. Every day brings one five-letter answer drawn from the world of choirs, church music and singing, the same for every player. You type any valid word, and the tiles show which letters are in the right place, which are in the word but elsewhere, and which are not in it at all. Six tries are allowed.

The game has a sense of humour about its subject. Solving quickly might earn a Gloria in excelsis deo, a slow solve is compared with the length of Psalm 119, and other messages borrow lines from anthems and the liturgy. Results can be copied and shared, and the game keeps statistics that carried over when the site moved to its new version.

Byrdle suits singers, organists and anyone who knows their anthems from their antiphons, and plays in a couple of minutes.

How to play Byrdle

  1. Open byrdle.net and type a five-letter word.
  2. Press Enter to submit the guess.
  3. Read the tile colours to see which letters are right, misplaced or absent.
  4. Think choral: the answer is always connected to choirs and church music.
  5. Find the word within six tries and share your result.

Tips

  • Start with a word full of common letters, then switch to choral vocabulary once you have a few letters.
  • Think of music terms, parts of a service, voice parts and composers' names.
  • Remember the answer must be a valid five-letter word, so plan your guesses carefully.
