A to Z Today, the daily alphabetical word game

A to Z Today is a daily word game played on the alphabet. One five-letter word is hidden each day, and every word you type tells you whether the answer comes before or after it, so the range between A and Z shrinks with each guess. Solve it in as few guesses as you can to keep your streak.

About A to Z Today

A to Z Today hides one five-letter word a day. The game opens with the whole dictionary as the range, from aardvark to zyzzyva. You type any valid English word, and the game tells you whether the secret word comes before or after it alphabetically, then shows the new, narrower range. If you guess hello and the answer is earlier, the range becomes aardvark to hello; the answer could now be cat but not pet.

You keep halving the range until you land on the word itself. The aim is to do it in as few guesses as possible. If you get stuck, a hint reveals part of the word at the cost of four extra attempts, and giving up shows the answer but breaks your streak and does not count in your stats.

The game counts down to the next word, keeps a daily streak, and has optional accounts that add your history, a chart of your attempts compared with other players, and leaderboards for streaks and games played.

It suits players who like logic as much as vocabulary: a good dictionary sense of where words fall in the alphabet matters more than spelling.

How to play A to Z Today

  1. Open atoztoday.com and type any valid English word.
  2. Submit it; the game says whether the hidden word comes before or after it alphabetically.
  3. Read the new range and guess a word that falls near its middle.
  4. Keep narrowing the range until you hit the exact five-letter word.
  5. Come back the next day to keep your streak alive.

Tips

  • Guess words from the middle of the current range to halve it every time.
  • Your guesses can be any valid word, not only five letters long; use whatever splits the range best.
  • Once the first two letters are fixed, think about which five-letter words start that way.
  • Save the hint for real emergencies; it adds four attempts to your count.
