Wordspan Daily #409 from Puzzmallow: a How To Play panel explaining that you guess a five-letter word in six attempts using alphabetical clues, where < means the left letter comes before the right, >

Wordspan is a Wordle-like daily from Puzzmallow where the clues are about the alphabet. The hidden word is shown as a chain of comparisons, such as P > E > A < C < H for PEACH, with vowels outlined; letters you place correctly turn green. Find the word in six guesses.

About Wordspan

Wordspan is a daily word puzzle from Puzzmallow. Each day there is one hidden five-letter word, the same for everyone and numbered by day, and you have six guesses to find it. The twist is that its clues are about the alphabet rather than about which of your letters are in the word.

After each guess, a symbol sits between every pair of neighbouring letters. A < means the left letter comes before the right one alphabetically, a > means it comes after, and an = means the two are the same. So the word PEACH reads P > E > A < C < H. Vowels are marked with a blue outline, and any letter you place in the right position turns green and is carried to the top.

Each guess must be a valid word, and you win when all five letters are green. There is no account, and the puzzle resets once a day.

It suits Wordle players who want a fresh kind of clue, and anyone who enjoys thinking about where letters fall in the alphabet.

How to play Wordspan

  1. Guess a valid five-letter word.
  2. Read the symbol between each pair of letters: < means the left letter is earlier in the alphabet, > means later, = means the same.
  3. Note that vowels are outlined in blue and correctly placed letters turn green at the top.
  4. Use the alphabetical clues to work out each letter's position in the word.
  5. Find the hidden word within six guesses.

Tips

  • Track the direction of the symbols across the word to picture whether letters rise or fall through the alphabet.
  • Lock in green letters first, then use the comparisons around them to bound their neighbours.
  • Remember vowels are flagged, so the blue outlines tell you where the A, E, I, O or U sit.
