Xordle Day 1649, Oct 5: the clue word GAUGE scored with two yellow letters, eight empty rows and a keyboard, with 'Two words remain'

Xordle is a free Wordle variant with two hidden five-letter words that have no letters in common. Every guess is scored against both at once, you get eight tries, and each day's numbered puzzle starts from a clue word that everyone shares.

About Xordle

Xordle doubles Wordle without splitting the board. There are two secret words, they share no letters, and each guess is coloured against both together: green if the letter is right and in place in either word, yellow if it is in either word elsewhere, grey if it is in neither. Counters under the keyboard show how many letters of the guess are green, yellow and grey, and you have eight tries to find both words.

The daily puzzle is numbered by day, counting from April 2022 on the game's clock, and opens with a clue word already played, the same for everyone. Many dailies are themed, though not obviously; random ones carry a dice mark. Now and then a crossover puzzle, marked with sparkles, breaks the rule: its two words share exactly one letter in the same position, which shows with a gold border when you find it. Readers can submit puzzles, and an Unlimited mode gives endless random pairs.

The game is free in the browser. It suits Wordle players who want a harder sorting problem, since each colour could belong to either word, and fans of Dordle who want both answers tangled into one grid.

How to play Xordle

  1. Open Xordle on the Daily tab; the day's clue word is already entered.
  2. Type a five-letter word and press Enter.
  3. Read the colours: green or yellow means the letter belongs to one of the two words, grey means neither.
  4. Use the fact that the two words share no letters (except on crossover days) to split the letters between them.
  5. Find both words within eight tries.

Tips

  • A grey letter is out of both words, so it rules out more than in Wordle.
  • Once you have one word, every letter in it is excluded from the other, except on crossover days.
  • Look for the theme: today's pair often relate to each other.
