Wordle! is a word guessing app published by Lion Studios Plus, the mobile studio behind Mr. Bullet and Happy Glass. It takes the format made popular by the web game Wordle and puts it in an app with several modes around it. It is free to download, carries ads and sells boosters and other extras in the app.

The daily part is Daily Puzzle mode. There is one word of the day, the same for everyone, and you have six guesses to find it. After each guess the tiles change colour: green for a letter in the right spot, yellow for a letter that is in the word but somewhere else, and grey for a letter that is not in it. The on-screen keyboard colours its keys the same way, so you can see which letters are left. When you solve it you can share your score and compare stats with friends.

The other modes are not shared by everyone and do not wait for tomorrow. Classic mode is unlimited Wordle, with hints when you are stuck. Word Fever is against the clock: spell each word before the timer runs out, and the timer resets with every word you find. Secret Word gives you letters and a clue and three chances per word, and three misses send you back to the start. Together Mode lets you pick a word for a friend or a random opponent to guess, taking turns and scoring by the fewest guesses. Boosters such as the Dart, which removes letters, a Hint that shows a correct letter and a Skip can be used in the levels.

It suits players who want the daily word game in an app on their phone with more to play once the day's word is solved. Players who mind ads should know that reviews on Google Play complain about long ads between rounds.

How to play Wordle! (Lion Studios)

1. Open the app and choose Daily Puzzle mode for the word of the day.
2. Type a five-letter word on the keyboard and press Submit.
3. Read the colours: green is the right letter in the right spot, yellow is in the word but elsewhere, grey is not in the word.
4. Use what the colours tell you to make your next guess, within six guesses in total.
5. When you solve it, share your score and compare your stats with friends, then try Classic, Word Fever or Secret Word for more.

Tips

• Start with a word that uses common, different letters, so the first row rules out as much as possible.
• Check the keyboard before each guess: grey keys are letters you can leave out.
• A yellow letter tells you where the letter is not as well as that it is in the word, so move it to a new spot next time.
• Keep the hints and boosters for Classic and the other modes; the daily word is the one to solve on your own and share.
