Hexagoat board of coloured hexagons with a colour palette and the How to play panel: Grow from the goat

Hexagoat is a daily flood-fill puzzle on GuessDash. A board of coloured hexagons starts with a goat in one cell; each time you pick a colour, every touching hexagon of that colour joins your shape, and the goal is to take over the whole board in the fewest moves.

About Hexagoat (GuessDash)

GuessDash is a site of daily puzzles about geography, history, art, data and estimation, including Capitalibrate and Capitalistate. Hexagoat is its colour logic game, with one board per date for all players.

The board is a field of hexagons in four colours. Your shape begins at the goat's cell. Choose a colour from the palette, or tap a neighbouring hex to use its colour, and your shape changes to that colour; every adjacent hex of the same colour joins it. Repeat until every hexagon on the board matches. Your result is the number of moves you needed, so the challenge is to plan an order of colours that swallows the biggest areas first.

There is an undo and a restart button, a short tutorial, and your daily result is saved; signing up is optional.

It suits fans of Flood-It style puzzles and anyone who likes a short optimisation problem with a single number to beat.

How to play Hexagoat (GuessDash)

  1. Look at the board and find the goat's starting cell.
  2. Pick a colour, or tap a neighbouring hex; all touching hexes of that colour join your shape.
  3. Keep choosing colours to spread across the board.
  4. Make every hexagon one colour in as few moves as you can.

Tips

  • Pick the colour that adds the most cells next to your shape, but look one move ahead.
  • Head for the centre early; it opens up more neighbours than the edges.
  • Isolated pockets of a colour are cheap to absorb later in one move.
  • Use undo to test two orders and keep the better one.
