BrainBashers ABC View for 3 October, Puzzle 1: an empty 5x5 grid with letter clues A, B and C and arrows around its edges

ABC View on BrainBashers is a small letter-placement puzzle. Every row and column of the 5x5 grid holds one A, one B, one C and two blanks, and the letters around the edge tell you which letter you meet first when looking in from that side.

About ABC View (BrainBashers)

ABC View is BrainBashers' version of the puzzle known elsewhere as Easy as ABC. The grid is 5x5, and every row and every column must contain exactly one A, one B and one C, with the other two squares left blank. Around the outside are clue letters with arrows. Each one names the first letter you would come to looking into the grid from that point along the row or column, skipping over blanks. Not every line has a clue at both ends.

Kevin Stone's site posts six of these a day, numbered 1 to 6, and the page says they all have a similar difficulty level. Each has its own dated page with check, pencil marks, answer, print and restart buttons, an option to show mistakes, an optional clock and an auto-grey option for finished clues. A help page walks through a solve.

The puzzles change at midnight GMT or at the time zone you set, and the date list keeps a few weeks of earlier days. No adverts, no account.

At a few minutes each, the six puzzles suit a short break, and the edge clues work much like those in Skyscrapers, so players of one tend to enjoy the other.

How to play ABC View (BrainBashers)

  1. Open the Daily ABC View page and pick one of today's six puzzles.
  2. Fill each row and column with one A, one B, one C and two blank squares.
  3. Match every edge clue: it is the first letter met looking into the grid from that side.
  4. Use pencil marks for letters a square might hold, and press check when you are done.
  5. Reveal the answer if needed; six new puzzles arrive after midnight GMT.

Tips

  • With only two blanks in each line, a clued letter must be in one of the three squares nearest its clue.
  • Each line has three letters, so the letters clued at its two ends are always different, and the third letter sits between them.
  • Mark blanks as carefully as letters: each line has exactly two.
  • Once a letter is placed, cross it out of every other square in that row and column.
