Daily Challenge is a browser arcade with one challenge a day. At midnight Mexico City time one of its Atari 2600-style games opens, with the same map and seed for every player, and you get one try. Scores are checked on the server and the Top 10 is frozen at the end of the day.

About Daily Challenge (dailychallenge.click)

Daily Challenge, made in Mexico by Ayotl, is an arcade built around a single daily try. Each day at 00:00 Mexico City time one game comes up from a rotation of eighteen: Snake, Breakout, Frogger, Galaga, Pac-Man, Nibbler, Tetris, Jewels, Asteroids, Pang, Basket, Battle City, Kaboom, Missile Command, Invaders, Dig Dug, Centipede and Space Impact. All are original versions written from scratch at 160x192 pixels with a 128-colour Atari 2600 palette and public-domain music turned into chiptune.

The map and seed are the same for everyone, so the same snake, the same ghosts and the same falling pieces greet every player that day, and the board compares skill rather than luck. You get one coin per day. Scores are worked out on the server by replaying your run key by key, ties go to whoever got there first, and at 23:59 the Top 10 is frozen for good. The day's champion gets a crown, an extra coin for the next day and a short message on the home screen.

The site also has a live party mode for two to five players and slow turn-based board games such as Gomoku and Reversi, and the itch.io page is a practice mode with all the games and unlimited tries that does not count for the board. It plays on phones with on-screen arrows or swipes and on computers with the arrow keys or WASD, in Spanish and English, free with no purchases.

Tips

  • Practise the day's game on the itch.io practice mode before spending your coin.
  • Since the seed is fixed, the same patterns come up for everyone; in Tetris the piece order is the same for all.
  • In Pac-Man the ghosts use no randomness, so routes can be learned.
