Tangledeep is Impact Gameworks' turn-based roguelike dungeon crawler, drawn in the style of SNES-era role-playing games. Its Daily Challenge gives every player the same seeded dungeon for the day and ranks how far each climbs on a leaderboard.

About Tangledeep

Tangledeep came out in February 2018 from the small studio Impact Gameworks, after an early access period on Steam. You leave an underground village to climb through Tangledeep, a labyrinth that is built anew on every run, toward a surface nobody remembers. Combat is turn-based on a grid: twelve jobs with over a hundred skills, hundreds of items, monsters you can capture and raise as pets, and an optional Adventure mode that softens permadeath.

Patch 1.07 added world seeds, which fix the dungeon layout, the drops, the monsters and the loot of a run so that two players can share the exact same game. Patch 1.08 built the challenges on top of them. The Daily Challenge hands every player the day's seed; you start a fresh character on a save slot and try to climb as far as you can and beat the final boss before the day runs out. Steam keeps leaderboards for the floor you reach and for boss kills, and a Weekly Challenge offers a longer version that resets on Mondays.

A full climb takes a few hours, so the daily is a long session rather than a coffee-break puzzle, and finishing one is rare: the daily boss achievement is held by under one percent of players. It suits players who like classic roguelikes and want to compare a run with others who faced the same floors.

How to play Tangledeep

  1. Start a new game on a free save slot and choose your difficulty.
  2. Pick the Daily Challenge from the challenge options.
  3. Choose a job and climb the floors, fighting in turns on the grid and picking up gear.
  4. Use skills, consumables and captured pets to survive deeper floors.
  5. Your highest floor and any boss kill go on the day's leaderboard; a new seed starts at midnight US Eastern time.

Tips

  • Challenge runs skip or speed up the cutscenes, so you can get straight into the climb.
  • Since the floors are the same for everyone, notes or videos from other players of the same seed can show where the danger is.
  • If the daily is too long for one sitting, try the Weekly Challenge, which gives you a week for the same kind of run.
