Le Bon Rang is a daily geography game about the cities of France, in French and also English, Spanish and German. Each day you rank five cities three times by a statistic such as population or distance to the sea, name the city of a monument from a photo, and drop a pin for one more city on a blank map. Everyone gets the same cities.

About Le Bon Rang

Le Bon Rang comes from the same maker as DailyGeo and Geopolitix, and focuses on France. It is free, needs no sign-up, runs in any browser and can be installed as an app. The French edition is at lebonrang.fr/fr/, with English, Spanish and German versions at their own addresses.

Every day has five rounds. The first three are rankings: you drag five French cities into the order a theme asks for. Themes always come in the same order: geography first, such as population, density, area, distance to Paris, distance to the sea or how far north; then everyday life, such as median income, rent per square metre or cycling to work; then one round for fun. When you confirm, the real values appear, with green for the exact spot, orange for one place off and red for further. The figures come from official INSEE and IGN data, and each round links to its source.

The fourth round shows a photo of a monument somewhere in France, and you have three tries to name its city, worth 150, 100 and 60 points. After two mistakes you get the department, or you can buy it before your first try for 50 points. The last round shows a blank map of France and one more city: you place a pin and the reveal measures how many kilometres you were off. Each solved ranking also opens a bonus slot where you name a commune whose value falls between two neighbours; the fewer other players pick it, the more it scores.

It suits players who know France or want to learn it, and anyone who likes ranking games.

How to play Le Bon Rang

  1. Read the theme of the ranking round, for example population.
  2. Drag the five French cities into the order the theme asks for and confirm.
  3. See the real values: green is exact, orange is one place off, red is further.
  4. After three rankings, name the city of the monument in the photo.
  5. Finish by pinning the last city on the blank map of France.

Tips

  • For distance themes, picture the coastlines and Paris before ordering.
  • In the bonus slot, pick a small commune: the fewer players who name it, the more it scores.
  • Skipping the photo or map round keeps your streak but loses its points.
