The Capitalistate card from GuessDash: the title, a USA tag and the line Aim between U.S. state capitals beside a globe with a capitol building and a dotted route

Capitalistate is the U.S. edition of GuessDash's aiming game. Each round starts you in one state capital, such as Des Moines, and names another to navigate to. Set the direction and the length of the shortest route, and the closer your landing point, the more you score.

About Capitalistate (GuessDash)

Capitalistate is a GuessDash geography game built on the same idea as Capitalibrate, but played across the United States instead of the whole world. Each round names a capital to start in, with its state, and a capital to navigate to. You choose the compass direction you would set off in and then answer how many kilometres or miles the shortest route is.

Your two answers combine into a landing point on the map, and each round is scored by how close you came. After every guess the map shows the real route beside yours, so you learn where each capital sits. The daily board has five rounds and is the same for every player that day.

GuessDash's own guide to learning state capitals suggests it as the step after name and map quizzes: once you know which city is the capital, Capitalistate trains where it lies and how far it is from the others. It is one of more than twenty daily GuessDash games that renew together, and no account is needed to play.

How to play Capitalistate (GuessDash)

  1. Read the round: the capital you start in and the capital to navigate to.
  2. Set the bearing you would leave in, with 0 degrees as north.
  3. Enter the distance of the shortest route in kilometres or miles.
  4. See the real route and your score, then move on to the next of the five rounds.

Tips

  • Many state capitals are not the largest city in their state, so picture the capital itself, not the best-known city.
  • Long east to west routes across the country bend slightly north on a globe, so aim a little north of a flat-map line.
