WhereSpoken daily puzzle with an audio sample player and a box to type the language

WhereSpoken plays you a short clip of someone talking, about twenty seconds, and asks which language it is and which country the speaker is from. Each wrong guess reveals another hint, and in normal mode hints about the language family are shown. A new clip arrives every day.

About WhereSpoken

WhereSpoken is a daily listening game from Polarcade, a small European maker of browser games. Each dated puzzle is an audio sample of a person speaking. The text itself contains no deliberate clues, so you have to go by the sound of the language.

You can play the clip as often as you like, at normal speed or slowed to three quarters. Type your guess of the language; a wrong guess unlocks the next hint. The aim is to identify both the language and the country of the speaker. Normal mode shows hints and the language's ancestry; there are other difficulty settings.

The site also has an explore page and a language tree for learning how languages relate, plus stats and badges. Past puzzles are available to supporters who sign in with a Polarcade account; today's puzzle is free.

It suits people interested in languages, travellers and anyone who enjoys a listening challenge.
