Comparle word of the day #30, koselig, round 1 asking which language it is from, with Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Icelandic around a radar

Comparle shows you a word from another language each day, with how to say it. In four rounds you place a dot on a radar to guess which language it comes from, when you would use it, where you hear it and what it means, then stake your score on a one-word English translation.

About Comparle

Comparle, a play on compare and the French parler, is a word-of-the-day game about the words other languages have. Each puzzle opens with the word and a pronunciation guide, such as koselig, sounds like KOO-suh-lee, and four rounds follow: the language, the moment you would use it, the place you would hear it, and its meaning.

Each round shows four answers around a radar. If you are sure, tap one; if you are torn between two, place your dot between them, which pays better than a wild guess. A round is worth up to 125 points and the colour of your result says how close you were. Peek at others shows where other players put their dot for half the round's points, and hearing the word spoken costs 30.

After the four rounds comes the last word: type the meaning in one English word to double your score, get one and a half times it for a close word, or halve it for a miss, or keep what you have. A streak grows with every day you play, a share card leaves out the word, and Practice and Blind modes sit beside the daily word. It has English and Dutch editions and can be installed on a phone's home screen.

How to play Comparle

  1. Read the day's foreign word and how it sounds.
  2. In each of four rounds, tap the answer you think is right on the radar, or place your dot between two if unsure, then lock in.
  3. See how close you were after each round (or play Blind to see all answers at the end).
  4. Stake your score on the last word by typing its meaning in one English word, or keep your score.
  5. Share your card and come back tomorrow to grow your streak.

Tips

  • A dot between two answers is safer than a guess when you can rule out the other two.
  • Save Peek at others for the meaning round, where points matter most before the multiplier.
  • The language round often helps with the place round, so think about both at once.
