About TOKOYO: The Tower of Perpetuity

TOKOYO: The Tower of Perpetuity is a pixel-art platformer roguelite by the Japanese developer //commentout, published by PLAYISM. It entered Early Access on Steam in 2020 and had its full release on Steam and Nintendo Switch in June 2022. You are trapped in a mysterious tower and climb it floor by floor, past monsters, traps, bullet patterns and bosses, toward a top nobody has seen.

There is no basic attack. You run, jump and double jump, and each character has one special skill on a long cooldown, so most of a climb is dodging and platforming, closer to a bullet hell than a brawler. There are five original characters, each with a different skill, plus official custom characters, and you can draw your own skins. The tower branches, so you choose between routes on the way up.

The daily part is the tower itself. The store page says the tower is regenerated by the game server every 24 hours in real-world time, so players around the world take on the same dungeon each day, and for one day only. Within the day you can climb as often as you like and learn its layout, then aim for the top of the daily ranking, which Steam and Switch players share. When you die, your gravestone, your relics and your last words appear in other players' towers.

Scoring rewards clean play: players note that a high score means moving fast, collecting coins and avoiding hits, while casual players can lean on healing and continues to simply reach the top. It suits players who like short, replayable action runs with a fresh layout every day.

How to play TOKOYO: The Tower of Perpetuity

  1. Pick a character; each has one special skill with a long cooldown.
  2. Climb the day's tower floor by floor, dodging traps, enemies and bullet patterns.
  3. Choose a route where the tower branches, and collect coins and relics on the way.
  4. When your run ends, your score enters the day's ranking and your gravestone stays in the tower for others.
  5. Come back after the tower is rebuilt for a new layout.

Tips

  • Use your early runs of the day to learn the layout, then go for score once you know where the traps are.
  • Save your special skill for crowded rooms and bosses rather than single enemies, since it takes a long time to recharge.
  • Treat a cluster of other players' gravestones as a warning: it marks a spot where many climbers died that day.
