Sequation board for October 7, 2026: target 55 with the operators plus, times, plus, minus, a tray of digits 0 to 10 and five empty guess rows

Sequation is a daily maths puzzle in the style of Wordle. Each day gives a target number and four operators that stay fixed; you place five digits from 0 to 10 between them and the sum is worked strictly left to right. Gold, green and grey tiles show which digits are right, misplaced or unused, and you have five guesses.

About Sequation

Sequation is a browser puzzle that takes the guess-and-feedback idea of Wordle and applies it to a short calculation. Each day has one puzzle, shown with its date and number: a target score in a yellow box and a row of four operators beneath it, for example plus, times, plus, minus. The operators stay the same for every guess. Your job is to find the exact sequence of five digits that goes between them.

The catch is the order of operations. Sequation works every line strictly from left to right, not by the BODMAS or PEMDAS rules taught at school, so 2 + 3 × 4 is 20 here, not 14. You pick digits from a tray of 0 to 10, place them in a row and press the equals sign to lock in a guess; every guess has to give a positive whole number. After each guess, a gold tile is the right digit in the right place, a green tile is a digit in the puzzle but in another place, and a grey tile is a digit the answer does not use. Digits can also be dragged outside the grid as scratch space while you work.

There are three difficulty levels: Apprentice, Mathematician and Genius. Mathematician is open to everyone without signing in. A free account unlocks the other two, keeps your progress across devices, and adds streaks, stats and an archive of every past puzzle back to the launch on 1 August 2026. Only today's puzzle, finished today, counts towards a streak. The game is free, with no ads and no in-app purchases, and can be played in English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Japanese.

It suits players of Nerdle, Mathler or Calcle who want a shorter equation to crack, and anyone who likes the extra twist of thinking left to right.

How to play Sequation

  1. Open sequation.app and note today's target number and the four operators below it.
  2. Choose a difficulty; Mathematician is available without an account.
  3. Place five digits from the 0 to 10 tray into the first row, between the fixed operators.
  4. Check the sum yourself working strictly left to right, then press = to lock the guess in.
  5. Read the tiles: gold is the right digit in the right place, green is in the answer elsewhere, grey is not used.
  6. Use the feedback to adjust and guess again; you have five rows to find the exact sequence.

Tips

  • Forget BODMAS: work every row left to right, so an early plus is multiplied by whatever comes after a times sign.
  • A guess has to give a positive whole number, so watch subtraction and division near the start of the row.
  • Grey digits are out of the puzzle entirely; strike them from the tray in your head.
  • Work backwards from the target: undo the last operator to see what the running total must be before it.
  • Drag spare digits outside the grid to try sums before committing a row.

Questions

When does a new Sequation puzzle appear?

Each puzzle belongs to a calendar date, and the game uses your device's date, so a new one is ready after midnight where you are.

What does calculated left to right mean?

Each operation is done in the order it appears, ignoring the usual rule that multiplication and division come first. 2 + 3 × 4 gives 20 in Sequation.

Is Sequation free?

Yes. The daily puzzle is free, with no ads and no in-app purchases.

Do I need an account?

No for the Mathematician level. A free account unlocks Apprentice and Genius, syncs progress across devices, and adds streaks, stats and the archive of past puzzles.

What do the colours mean?

Gold is the right digit in the right position, green is a digit that is in the answer but in another position, and grey is a digit that is not used at all.
