CancelWise is a daily number puzzle played on a grid of positive and negative numbers. Click cells to cancel them so that the numbers left in each row and column add up to the sums shown at the ends. Each date has easy, medium, hard and expert grids, and you can go back to earlier days.
About CancelWise
CancelWise is a daily number and logic puzzle played on a grid of positive and negative numbers, with a target sum shown at the end of each row and each column. The aim is to cancel some cells so that the numbers left in every row and column add up to their targets.
Each date carries four grids in rising difficulty: easy, medium, hard and expert. You click a cell to cancel it, which drops its value from the sums of its row and its column. When a line's remaining numbers match its target the sum turns green, and the puzzle is solved once every row and column is green. A timer tracks how long you take.
The grids are generated from the date, so everyone playing on a given day gets the same puzzle, and arrows at the top step back to earlier dates. The grid sizes grow with difficulty, so easy is a quick warm-up while expert is a longer sitting.
It suits players who like short arithmetic logic puzzles and want to choose how hard their session is. It runs in the browser, is free and needs no account; the maker takes questions and feedback on Bluesky.
How to play CancelWise
- Pick a difficulty from easy to expert.
- Click a cell to cancel it and drop its value from the sums.
- Match every row and column total to the target at its end; a matched sum turns green.
- Solve the grid when all sums are green.
Tips
- Start from a row or column whose current total is far from its target: it tells you roughly how much you still need to cancel.
- A cancelled cell leaves both its row and its column, so look for cells that help two lines at once.
- Watch the negative numbers: cancelling a negative raises that line's total, so decide whether you need to remove it or keep it.
- Try easy first to see how the targets respond, then move up; the higher levels use bigger grids.
Questions
Is the puzzle the same for everyone?
Yes. Each date's grids are generated from the date, so every player gets the same puzzle that day.
Are there difficulty levels?
Yes. Each day has easy, medium, hard and expert grids, and the grid gets larger as the difficulty rises.
Can I play earlier days?
Yes. Arrows at the top step back to previous dates.
How do I know a line is correct?
When the remaining numbers in a row or column match the target at its end, that sum turns green; solve the grid when all sums are green.
Is it free?
Yes. It runs in the browser for free and needs no account.
