Septonum

Septonum #643, calculation 1 of 7: target 691, the numbers 4, 50, 6, 9, 3 and 1, the four operation buttons and a timer at 1:55

Septonum is a daily mental math game in the style of the Countdown numbers round. Each of seven calculations gives you six numbers and a three-digit target, and you combine them with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to get as close as you can within two minutes. Scores reward closeness and speed, out of 700 for the day.

About Septonum

Septonum, from Jema Games, sets seven calculations every day. Each one shows a target between 101 and 999 and six numbers, such as 4, 50, 6, 9, 3 and 1 against a target of 691. You press Start and have two minutes to build a solution step by step: pick a number, an operation and another number, and the result becomes a new number you can use. Undo and Reset let you change course.

Each calculation is scored out of 100 points: up to 80 for how close you get and up to 20 for speed, with an Exact! badge when you hit the target. The seven rounds add up to a day's score out of 700. Results can be shared, and you can challenge a friend on a single calculation.

Friends can create rooms to compare day and week scores, with a chat and a weekly podium, and a global leaderboard is open to anyone who chooses to show a nickname. A practice mode offers extra calculations, and a statistics page tracks your days, exact matches and streak. The game is in English and French; its makers also publish Septogrid.

How to play Septonum

  1. Open septonum.com and press Start for the first of the day's seven calculations.
  2. Look at the target and your six numbers.
  3. Combine two numbers with +, -, × or ÷; the result becomes a new number you can use.
  4. Keep going until you hit the target or get as close as you can, then press Submit before two minutes run out.
  5. Move on to the next calculation and share your score out of 700 at the end.

Tips

  • Multiply the large number first to get near the target, then fix the difference with the small ones.
  • Work out how far off the nearest easy product is, and build that gap from the remaining numbers.
  • Speed is only 20 of each 100 points: closeness matters more than a fast answer.
  • Practice mode is a good place to learn common patterns before the daily rounds.
