About Nova Drift

Nova Drift is a top-down space shooter in the style of Asteroids, made by Chimeric and published by Pixeljam. It spent several years in Early Access before its full release on Steam in August 2024. You fly a small ship that drifts with momentum and wraps around the screen, and you fight waves of enemies, bosses, asteroids and comets.

The main idea is build crafting. Each time you level up you pick an upgrade from a honeycomb of choices: a weapon, shield or body gear, one of more than 200 mods, or a super mod that changes how a weapon works. A run goes from a weak starting ship to a screen-filling build within one session, and the waves keep coming until you die or reach the final boss at wave 120. There are also Endless, Draft and Wild Metamorphosis modes.

The Daily Challenge mode arrived with the free 1.2 update on 5 June 2025. Each day the game picks one of ten challenge modes, for example Boss Rush, where you face every boss in a row, Serpentine Drift, where you play a Snake-like Leviathan, or Cosmic Egg, where you must protect an egg the enemies want to break. It then adds modifiers from a list of 23, such as Frenzy (faster enemies), Rogue Harder (no rerolls) or Long Shot (a much larger battlefield). The developer describes it as a new seeded challenge each day, with everyone playing the same seed and competing globally.

Because the mode and modifiers change daily, the daily run often asks for a build you would not try in a normal game. It suits players who already know the basic upgrades and want a fresh, comparable test each day. Nova Drift is also sold on iOS and Android, but the daily leaderboard described here is from the Steam version.

How to play Nova Drift

1. Pick Daily Challenge from the main menu to see today's challenge mode and modifiers.
2. Fly with thrust and steering, shoot enemies and collect the experience orbs they drop.
3. At each level up, choose an upgrade: gear, a mod, or a super mod when its requirements are met.
4. Survive the waves and bosses for as long as you can; your score goes to the day's leaderboard.
5. Come back the next day for a different mode and modifier mix.

Tips

• Read the day's modifiers before your first upgrade: modes such as Purity or Chosen One change which builds make sense.
• In Cosmic Egg, pick upgrades that kill enemies away from the egg, since losing the egg ends the run even if your ship is fine.
• Runs you resume with Save and Quit are not sent to the online leaderboards, so play a ranked daily in one sitting.
