Movie Timeliner, a daily game of sorting films by release date

Movie Timeliner is a daily film trivia game: each day gives you eight movies to place on a timeline in the order they were released. One film starts in place, you add the rest one poster at a time, and you can skip one. It comes from Steady Koalas, the makers of Music Timeliner, which does the same with songs.

About Movie Timeliner

Movie Timeliner is a free browser game from Steady Koalas, who also make Music Timeliner. It launched in September 2026 and follows the same idea with films: the daily game gives every player the same eight movies, and you sort them by release date.

One film is already on the timeline with its year showing. The next card shows a poster and title, and you drop it before or after the films already placed. Each placement is checked at once and a wrong one is marked as a miss. You may skip one film per game. A hard mode hides every year until the end, which makes each placement depend only on your own memory; it has to be chosen before you start. At the end you get your score and a share text, and the game keeps your streak.

Besides the daily set there is Endless, where you keep adding films until you have lost three lives, an archive of earlier days, and a builder for custom timelines: search for films or for an actor or director, choose an order and send the link to friends. Posters and data come from TMDB, and each card links to the film's IMDb page. Statistics stay on your device, and a transfer code moves them to another one.

The film guessing dailies mostly ask you to name a movie from a clue. Movie Timeliner gives you the names and asks only when they came out, which suits people who know film history and release years more than plots or quotes.

How to play Movie Timeliner

  1. Open the daily game; one film is already on the timeline with its year.
  2. Look at the next poster and title.
  3. Place it before or after the films already on the timeline, by release date.
  4. Repeat for all eight films, using your one skip on a film you cannot place.
  5. See your score at the end, share it, then try Endless or the archive.

Tips

  • Use the films you are sure of as anchors and place the uncertain ones relative to them.
  • Sequels and remakes are easy to mix up; check the poster style and the cast to tell which version it is.
  • Keep the skip for the last few cards, where a gap between two close years is hardest to call.
  • Hard mode cannot be switched on mid-game, so choose it before you place the first film.
