WhenTaken Movies

Guess where and when a film scene is set, from a single still.

Every day: A new daily game of film stills, the same for every player: for each scene, pin on the map where the story is set and choose the year it takes place, over several scored rounds. New puzzle: Once a day; the site does not state the time.

The example film still on WhenTaken Movies: the Reflecting Pool in Washington with protesters and soldiers

WhenTaken Movies is Teuteuf Games' film version of WhenTaken. Each day you get a set of movie stills, and for each one you drop a pin where the scene is set and pick the year, from 1860 to now; the closer you are, the more you score. Hints point at the clues in the frame, and an archive keeps past days.

About WhenTaken Movies

WhenTaken Movies comes from Teuteuf Games, the studio behind WhenTaken, Worldle and a family of other daily geography games. It takes the WhenTaken idea, placing a picture in time and space, and swaps real photographs for scenes from films.

The question is not when the film was made but when and where its story is set. A still of the Reflecting Pool with protest signs and late-1960s clothes puts you in Washington around the Vietnam War, whatever year the film came out. For each scene you place a pin on a world map and set a year on a slider or type it in, anywhere from 1860 to the present. The game scores each round on how close both guesses are, and your total builds across the day's rounds.

If you are stuck, hints list details in the frame worth noticing: a landmark, a uniform, a style of dress. Past days are in the archive, and you can keep stats with an account. The site carries ads, with a paid option to remove them.

It suits WhenTaken and TimeGuessr players who also watch a lot of films, and film fans who like spotting period detail.

How to play WhenTaken Movies

  1. Open WhenTaken Movies and start the daily game.
  2. Study the film still for clues to the place and period of the story.
  3. Place your pin on the map where you think the scene is set.
  4. Move the slider or type the year in which you think it takes place.
  5. Submit to see the answer and your score, then play the next round.

Tips

  • Guess the setting of the story, not the year the film came out; period films are common.
  • Landmarks give the place fast; clothes, cars and signs give the decade.
  • If you recognise the film, think about where its plot happens, not where it was shot.
  • Use the hints when a still has no landmark; they point at the details that matter.
