Moviedle at Histordle, the daily game of guessing the year three films came out

Moviedle at Histordle is a daily guess-the-year game for film fans. You get three films that came out in the same year, with their directors and genres, and you have eight tries to name that year; the colour of each guess tells you how close you are. A new puzzle goes up at midnight Central Time.

About Moviedle (Histordle)

This Moviedle is part of Histordle, a small family of guess-the-year games that also includes Yeardle for historical events, Songle for songs and PopCultured for pop culture. It is not the same game as the Moviedle at moviedle.xyz, which asks you to name a film.

Each day you see three films that were all released in one year, for example Police Academy, Ghostbusters and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Each comes with its director and its genres. You type a year. The answer box lights up in a colour that shows how close you were, and it is up to you to decide whether to go higher or lower. You have eight tries, and the stats track how many years your first guess was off by.

If you want help before your first guess, an extra hint gives you a direction. Each game also has an Unlimited version for practice.

It suits film fans who know release years, and players of timeline games who like a puzzle that ends in a single number.

How to play Moviedle (Histordle)

  1. Open Moviedle at Histordle and read the three films, with their directors and genres.
  2. Type the year you think all three were released.
  3. Read the colour of the answer box to see how close you are.
  4. Decide whether to go higher or lower and guess again.
  5. Find the year within eight tries and share your result.

Tips

  • Start with the film you can date most surely and treat the others as checks.
  • Franchise entries help: a third film in a series dates itself from the first.
  • A cast or director at the start of their career narrows the range.
  • Use the colour feedback to halve the range rather than stepping one year at a time.
