Yeardle at Histordle, the daily game of guessing the year of three historical events

Yeardle is Histordle's daily guess-the-year game for history. You get three events that all happened in the same year and have eight tries to name it, with a colour on each guess telling you how close you are. The year can be anywhere in recorded history, including before the common era.

About Yeardle

Yeardle is the history game at Histordle, a site of guess-the-year dailies that also has Songle for songs, Moviedle for films and PopCultured for pop culture. A new Yeardle goes up every day at midnight Central Time.

Each puzzle lists three events from one year. Some days they are well known; other days they are obscure, such as the fall of Pavia, the election of a doge of Venice and an emperor's retreat from a malaria outbreak, all from the same year in the eleventh century. You type a year, with a minus sign for BC or BCE, and the answer box changes colour to show how close you are. You decide whether to go higher or lower, and you have eight tries.

An optional hint gives a direction for your first guess, and the statistics track how far your first guess usually lands from the answer. An Unlimited version lets you keep playing.

It suits history readers who like dates, and anyone who enjoys a hot-and-cold puzzle that ends in one number.

How to play Yeardle

  1. Open Yeardle and read the three events.
  2. Type the year you think they all happened; use a minus sign for years BC.
  3. Read the colour of the answer box to see how close you are.
  4. Go higher or lower and guess again.
  5. Find the year within eight tries and share your result.

Tips

  • Anchor on the event you can place best, even roughly, and use the others to refine it.
  • Names of rulers, popes and doges often fix the century at once.
  • Use the colours to halve the range on each guess.
  • Try the direction hint before your first guess on days when nothing is familiar.
