Mini nerdle tile art: a row of green and purple tiles ending in a 6, above two grey rows

Mini nerdle is the six-character version of nerdle, the daily maths puzzle. You guess a hidden calculation in six tries, every guess must be a valid equation, and coloured tiles show which characters are right and where.

About Mini Nerdle

Mini nerdle is part of the nerdleverse, the family of number games that started with nerdle. It works exactly like classic nerdle but uses six characters instead of eight, so the sums are simpler, for example 12+3=15 or 9*4=36.

There is one numbered puzzle a day for everyone, and a new one appears at midnight GMT. Each guess must be a correct equation. After you enter it, green means the right character in the right place, purple means the character is in the solution but somewhere else, and grey means it is not in the solution at all. You have six tries.

The nerdle team suggests it as a starting point for anyone who finds classic nerdle daunting, and says it is popular in classrooms because the shorter puzzles fit into lesson time. Six characters still take careful logic, especially once multiplication and division come in. A free nerdle account adds extras, but you can play without one.

It suits newcomers to equation puzzles, children practising arithmetic and nerdle regulars who want a quick second game.

How to play Mini Nerdle

  1. Open mini nerdle in a browser.
  2. Enter a valid six-character equation, such as 9+5=14.
  3. Read the tiles: green is right and in place, purple is in the solution elsewhere, grey is not used.
  4. Find the hidden equation within six tries, then share your result.

Tips

  • Start with a guess that uses several different digits and an operator you have not tried.
  • Every guess has to be a true equation, so use each one to test both digits and an operator.
  • Remember that the result must be a whole number, which limits divisions a lot.
