HowMany question of the day number 458 about popcorn sales at a stadium, with six empty guess rows

HowMany is a daily estimation game. Each day there is one numbered question, such as how many popcorn servings a stadium sells per game, and you have six guesses to land within 20 percent of the real answer.

About HowMany

HowMany is a small web game built around a single question each day. The question always asks for a quantity from the real world, for example how many popcorn servings a sports stadium sells per game, and it comes with a one-line hint. Questions are numbered; number 458 was the question for 2 October 2026.

You type a number and submit it. An arrow tells you whether the real answer is higher or lower, and the colour of your guess shows how close you are: orange means you are within 50 percent of the answer, red means you are further off. You win as soon as a guess lands within 20 percent of the true figure, and you have six tries.

Because the target is a range rather than an exact figure, the game is about reasoning and narrowing down rather than knowing the fact. Halving the gap after each arrow works, but a good first estimate saves guesses. A history of earlier questions is available from the question box, and the stats panel keeps your win rate, streak and guess distribution.

It suits people who like Fermi questions and back-of-the-envelope maths, and it takes a minute or two a day. There is no sign-up and no ads on the game page.

How to play HowMany

  1. Read the day's question and its hint.
  2. Type a number in the box and press Submit.
  3. Look at the arrow: up means the answer is higher, down means lower.
  4. Use the colour (orange within 50 percent, red further away) to judge how far to move.
  5. Get a guess within 20 percent of the real answer in six tries to win.

Tips

  • Start with a sensible estimate built from things you know (capacity, time, rate) rather than a random number.
  • After the first arrow, move by large factors until the colour turns orange, then narrow down.
  • Only 20 percent accuracy is needed, so do not waste guesses on exact figures.
