Dungeon Deathball: a small arena grid with two players, a ball and monsters whose arrows show their next moves, with Rest, Pass, Shoot and Undo buttons

Dungeon Deathball is a turn-based tactics game where a team of two prisoners tries to carry, pass and shoot a ball into the goal while monsters try to kill them. Its Daily Challenge gives every player the same stages, monsters and perks, with one try and a leaderboard that starts fresh each day.

About Dungeon Deathball

Dungeon Deathball is by Matt Glanville, who left early access with version 1.0 in October 2021. Your team are captives who win their freedom by surviving a gauntlet of barbaric matches in a dungeon arena. Each stage is a small grid with a goal, a ball, traps, gems and monsters, and you have a turn limit and a par to beat. Players move, pass, shoot and rest, and enemies show with arrows where they will move and strike next, so most of the game is about using that warning: stepping out of the way, or luring one monster into another's attack.

The Daily Challenge was added during early access, when the developer switched the game to seeded generation so a run could be reproduced. Everyone gets exactly the same challenge: the stage layouts, the monsters, the perks offered and the tiles the monsters choose to step on. You get one chance at it each day, your score goes on that day's Steam leaderboard, and the leaders of past days can still be looked up. Seasonal events, such as a Halloween Trick or Treat and an Easter Egg Hunt, have changed the Daily Challenge for a week at a time.

Other modes unlock as you play: Judgment Mode, where you face the final boss again and again, and a faster Action Mode. There are more than 80 achievements, many tied to those unlocks.

It suits players who like short tactical puzzles of position and timing, in the line of Into the Breach, with a daily score to compare.

Tips

  • Use the monsters' telegraphed attacks against them: step aside so one hits another.
  • Scoring under par and picking up gems both add to your score, so do not rush every goal.
  • Resting restores stamina; a tired player is easy to catch.

Questions

Is the Daily Challenge the same for every player?

Yes. It is generated from one seed for the day, so stage layouts, enemies, perks and enemy moves are identical for everyone.

How many attempts do I get?

One chance a day. Your score is submitted to the leaderboard even if you abandon the run.

Is it a sports game?

Only in theme: it is a turn-based tactics game with a made-up ball sport in a monster dungeon.
