Countryle is a daily country guessing game played with facts instead of maps. Each guess is compared with the hidden country on clues such as continent, hemisphere, population, average temperature and compass direction, and each clue turns green, orange or red with arrows for higher or lower. You reason your way to the answer in as few tries as you can.

About Countryle

Countryle appeared in the spring of 2022, part of the run of country guessing games that followed Wordle and Worldle. It is played in the browser and can be switched between English, Spanish and Catalan.

You start by typing any country and picking it from the list. The game lays out a row of clues comparing your choice with the hidden country: whether the continent and hemisphere match, which direction the answer lies in, and how its population, area and average temperature compare. Each box is green when it matches, orange when it is close and red when it is far off, and number clues carry an arrow saying whether the hidden country's figure is higher or lower. You keep guessing until you find it, or give up and see the answer.

That makes Countryle less about recognising shapes and more about deduction. A guess that is in the right hemisphere with a much smaller population and a colder climate rules out a large part of the map at once. A Creative mode lets you build your own puzzle for friends from a longer list of clues, including GDP per person, coastline length, highest mountain, CO2 emissions and even the men's football team's FIFA ranking.

It suits players who like numbers and trivia as much as maps, and who enjoy working down a list of possibilities rather than guessing by sight. Statistics and a personal map of countries you have found keep track of your progress.

How to play Countryle

  1. Type a country name at the bottom of the page and pick it from the list.
  2. Press Guess it to see how your country compares with the hidden one.
  3. Read each clue: green is a match, orange is close, red is far off.
  4. Follow the arrows on number clues, which show whether the hidden country's figure is higher or lower.
  5. Guess again using what you have learned until you find the country, then share your result.

Tips

  • Start with a large, central country so the direction and hemisphere clues split the world in useful ways.
  • Use population and area together; a small population with a large area points to deserts, tundra or sparsely settled countries.
  • Average temperature quickly separates tropical countries from temperate ones within the same continent.
  • Keep a mental list of candidates and cross off any that break a clue you have already seen.
