Wildfrost

Lead a band of card companions through an eternal winter, and get one try a day at the same frozen voyage as everyone else.

Every day: The Daily Voyage: one seeded run a day with a randomised deck, four modifiers and two or three modifier bells, the same for every player. You get one attempt, and the score goes on a leaderboard that lasts for that day. New puzzle: 5pm Pacific Time, according to a player guide.

Wildfrost is a tactical deck-building roguelike from Deadpan Games and Gaziter, published by Chucklefish, in which your companions and items act on counters that tick down each turn. Its Daily Voyage gives every player the same seeded run with a randomised deck and modifiers, one attempt, and a leaderboard for the day.

About Wildfrost

Wildfrost came out on Steam in April 2023, made by Deadpan Games and Gaziter and published by Chucklefish. The sun has frozen over, and from the town of Snowdwell you set out with a leader from one of several tribes to reach the Sun Temple. Battles take place on a small board: each companion and enemy has a counter that ticks down every turn, and it attacks when the counter hits zero. You play companions and items from your deck, attach charms to cards, and plan around who will strike next.

The Daily Voyage is a separate mode with its own run each day. It starts from a randomised deck, adds four modifiers drawn from good and bad lists, such as a leader with better stats or starting cards weighed down by cursed charms, and two or three modifier bells that change the rules further. Everyone gets the same starting conditions, choices and random seed, so two players who made the same moves would see the same result. Your own unlocks do not matter: every card, tribe, event and charm is available in the daily, so a new save and a finished one play the same voyage.

You only get one attempt. According to a widely used player guide, the score adds together a bonus for winning every battle, the bling you earn along the way, and a point for every second you finish under sixty minutes, so the top results come from runs that are both clean and fast. The leaderboard only covers that day's voyage, and you can compare with your friends as well as everyone else.

The Daily Voyage suits players who know the counter system and want a fixed run they cannot reset. Wildfrost is also on Xbox, iOS and Android; the mobile version is free to try up to the first boss and unlocked with a single purchase.

How to play Wildfrost

  1. Open Wildfrost and, in Snowdwell, choose the Daily Voyage instead of a normal run.
  2. Look over the day's deck, modifiers and bells; everyone has the same ones today.
  3. Pick your route on the map and fight each battle by playing companions and items, watching each unit's counter to see who attacks next.
  4. Choose rewards, charms and shop items along the way, and try to win every battle without losing companions.
  5. Finish the voyage as cleanly and quickly as you can, then check your score on that day's leaderboard. There is no second attempt.

Tips

  • Finishing under sixty minutes earns time points, so a run won in thirty minutes scores far more than one won in fifty.
  • Quitting to the title screen pauses the timer, so take breaks that way rather than leaving the game idle.
  • Combo kills earn extra bling, and every bling earned counts toward the score whether you spend it or not.
  • Read the modifier bells before the first fight; some help you and some quietly punish the plan you would normally use.
  • Since all cards are unlocked in the daily, expect companions and charms you may not have seen yet in your own save.
