Wheredle's daily Street View scene of a city street with the state guess drop-down and Submit button

Wheredle drops you into a Google Street View scene somewhere in the United States and asks which state you are in. You can look around and move along the street for clues, such as signs, plates and landscape, then pick a state from the list. It is a daily game with a detective spin, now run on locations sent in by players.

About Wheredle

Wheredle is a Wordle-like daily geography game made by Amber Sah. Each day's puzzle opens on a Google Street View panorama: a city block, a rural road or a small-town street somewhere in the United States.

You can turn the view, zoom and move along the road to hunt for clues. Licence plates, road signs, shop names, architecture, vegetation and the weather all help. When you think you know, you choose a state from the drop-down and submit your guess, and a colour bar under the view tracks your guesses.

The game says it has had more than 500,000 players and over six million plays, and that it now runs on user submissions: players send in locations by email. A help button explains the rules, and the page notes that content blockers on Safari can stop the map from loading.

It suits GeoGuessr fans who want one quick round a day limited to the US, and anyone who likes reading small details in a scene.

How to play Wheredle

  1. Open Wheredle and look at the day's Street View scene.
  2. Turn the view and move along the street to look for clues.
  3. Choose the state you think it is from the drop-down list.
  4. Press Submit and use the feedback to guess again if you missed.

Tips

  • Licence plates and road sign styles narrow the state fastest.
  • Look at the vegetation and terrain to tell desert, plains and coast apart.
  • Shop and business names often include a town or state.
