Where? roughly. shows you an animal's silhouette and name, then an empty world map. You slide the map until the crosshair sits where you think the animal lives and drop your pin. The game tells you how far you were from its real range and how you did next to everyone else.

About Where? roughly.

Where? is one of the daily guessing games from roughly., a small site where every game asks for an estimate rather than an exact answer. In this one the question is place: where in the world does a given animal live?

Each day has five animals, the same for every player. A round shows a drawn silhouette, the animal's name and a one-line description, for example a small striped marsupial that eats termites with a long tongue. The crosshair stays fixed in the middle of the screen and you drag the world map under it, with a finger, the arrow keys or plus and minus to zoom. When you press the button, the animal's real range appears on the map. A pin inside the range counts as in range; otherwise the game gives the distance in kilometres, a short verdict running from practically neighbours to the opposite side of the Earth, and the share of players you beat. A fact from Wikipedia explains what makes the animal surprising.

New animals arrive at midnight UTC. Today's rounds are free and need no account, and you get one hint a day. Past days are part of the paid roughly+ tier. You can challenge a friend, or open a room and play the same five together or with a stream audience. The game runs in English and German, with ranges based on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons maps and coastlines from Natural Earth.

How to play Where? roughly.

  1. Read the animal's name and description and look at its silhouette.
  2. Drag the world map so the fixed crosshair sits where you think the animal lives; zoom in for more precision.
  3. Press Drop pin to lock in your guess.
  4. See the real range, your distance from it and how you compare with other players.
  5. Repeat for all five animals, then share your result or challenge a friend.

Tips

  • Think about the habitat first: sea ice, rainforest, savanna or desert narrows the map quickly.
  • Some ranges are huge and some are tiny islands; for a small range, zoom in before you drop the pin.
  • Sea animals have ranges at sea, so do not be afraid to pin open water.
  • Save the daily hint for the animal you know least.
