How big? roughly. share image

How big? roughly. puts two things side by side, such as a giraffe and the Great Pyramid. The left one is fixed at its true scale; you drag the right one until it looks the right size, or type the number. The game shows how many times too big or too small you were.

About How big? roughly.

How big? is one of the daily guessing games from roughly., a small site where every game asks for an estimate rather than an exact answer. Here the question is size: how tall, long or wide is something compared with a thing you already know?

Each day brings five pairs, the same for every player. A pair might be an emperor penguin and a tennis racket, the Willis Tower and the Statue of Unity, or a rhino and a hockey puck. The left shape is the reference and does not change. You drag a handle on the right shape, or use the arrow keys, until you think it has the right size, or you type its height or length in metres, feet or another unit. The view zooms out as needed so both things always fit, and when the target is much bigger, copies of the reference stack up behind it so you can count how many fit.

Your result for each round is a factor, such as 1.3x too big, rather than points, and the day's result combines all five. You also see what share of players got closer. New pairs arrive at midnight UTC. Today's rounds are free and need no account; past days need the paid roughly+ tier. You can challenge a friend or open a room to play the same five together. The game runs in English and German and links each object to its Wikipedia article.

How to play How big? roughly.

  1. Read what the two objects are; the left one is shown at its real size.
  2. Drag the handle on the right object, or use the arrow keys, until it looks the right size next to the reference.
  3. Or type the size directly in the unit shown.
  4. Press Lock it in to see the real size and how many times off you were.
  5. Play all five pairs, then share your result or challenge a friend.

Tips

  • Check which measure is asked: height, length, diameter and wingspan all come up.
  • Use what you know about the reference, like a giraffe at about five metres, and count how many would fit.
  • A factor of 2 too big is as far off as a factor of 2 too small, so do not be shy of large guesses.
