A Guess the Size daily round: a baseball of 2.91 inches as the reference beside a six-sided die being resized on a ruler, with the slider and Lock button below

Guess the Size is a free browser game about how big things really are. Each day brings the same five objects for everyone, and you resize each one next to something familiar, like a baseball or a person, until it looks right. Every guess scores up to 100 points by how close you got, and the result can be shared.

About Guess the Size

Guess the Size puts a familiar object on the left of a ruler with its real size marked, and a mystery object on the right. You drag the object, use the slider or pinch on a phone to make it as big or as small as you think it really is, then lock in your guess. The game shows the real size, how far off you were and your score.

The daily puzzle is five objects, the same for everyone on the same date, and a new set starts at midnight in your own time zone. Objects come from categories such as animals, bugs and insects, food, everyday things, sports, music, plants, landmarks, and vehicles and space, so one day can ask how wide a six-sided die is and the next how long a blue whale is. Each object is worth up to 100 points: within 6% of the real size scores full marks, half or double scores about 45, and five times off scores close to nothing. Too big and too small count the same.

Past daily puzzles can be played from an archive, though they do not count toward your streak. Besides the daily set there is an Unlimited mode with ten random objects a run, quick five-round games from a single category, and a Duel mode where the closer guess knocks a heart off the other side. Units switch between metres and feet.

The sizes are typical values taken from encyclopedias and sources such as NASA and the US National Park Service, rounded to keep them simple. Scores and settings are kept in your browser, with no account. It suits anyone who likes estimation games and odd facts about scale, and a day's five guesses take a few minutes.

Tips

  • Use the ruler under the objects: read your guess off it rather than judging the picture alone.
  • Think in multiples of the reference: a giraffe is a little over three adults tall, a blue whale about two city buses long.
  • Switch to the unit you know best with the m and ft buttons before you start.
  • Play a category round in the subject you know least to learn sizes you keep getting wrong.
