Where from? roughly. share image

Where from? roughly. shows you a real company logo, such as Prada or Vivendi, and an empty world map. You slide the map under a fixed crosshair to where you think the headquarters is and drop your pin, then see the real city, how far off you were and how you compare with other players.

About Where from? roughly.

Where from? is one of the daily guessing games from roughly., a small site where every game asks for an estimate rather than an exact answer. It works like the site's animal map game, Where?, but the target is a single point: the city where a company has its head office.

Each day brings five companies, the same for every player, from household names to companies you may only know by their logo. A round shows the company's logo and a one-line description of what it does. You drag the world map under the crosshair, zooming with plus and minus or the keyboard, and drop the pin. The reveal names the city and country, gives your distance in kilometres and a verdict such as right city, neighbouring country or wrong continent entirely, and shows the share of players who landed further away. A hint, one per day, tells you the company's industry and the year it was founded.

New rounds arrive at midnight UTC. Today's rounds are free and need no account; past days need the paid roughly+ tier. You can challenge a friend or open a room to play the same five together. The game runs in English and German, takes its company facts and logos from Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons, and links each answer to its Wikidata entry.

How to play Where from? roughly.

  1. Look at the company logo and read the short description.
  2. Drag the world map so the fixed crosshair sits on the city you think is the headquarters; zoom in to be precise.
  3. Press Drop pin.
  4. See the real headquarters city, your distance from it and how other players did.
  5. Play all five, then share your result or challenge a friend.

Tips

  • A brand name that sounds like one country may be based in another; trust what you know about the company, not its name.
  • Many large companies sit in a country's biggest business city rather than its capital.
  • Use the one daily hint on the company you know least; the industry and founding year can point to a country.
