ScreenIdle

Name today's film from a blurred poster, a tagline or a title with gaps.

Every day: Three numbered film puzzles each day, the same for every player: name the film from a pixelated poster that sharpens with each guess, from its tagline and year, or by filling the missing letters of its title (Blank Buster). Six guesses or lives in each. New puzzle: Once a day; the site does not state the time.

ScreenIdle, daily film guessing games

ScreenIdle is a small set of daily film guessing games. The poster game shows a heavily pixelated movie poster that gets clearer after each wrong or skipped guess, with six tries in all. The tagline game gives you a film's tagline and release year, and Blank Buster asks you to fill in a hidden title letter by letter with six lives.

About ScreenIdle

ScreenIdle gathers three short film puzzles on one site, each with its own numbered daily game and its own share text. You can play one or all three, in any order, and each one takes a couple of minutes.

The Movie Poster Game starts with a poster reduced to large blocks of colour. You pick a film from the search list or skip, and after each wrong answer or skip the pixels get smaller and the image sharper. You have six goes, and your shared score shows how many you needed. Poster images come from TMDB.

The Movie Tagline Game shows the promotional line from a film's poster or trailer along with its year, for example a line such as Sooner or later they'll find you with 2001 underneath, and you again have six guesses to choose the right film from the list. Blank Buster is a hangman-style puzzle: the title is shown as a row of blanks, you tap letters on an on-screen keyboard, and each wrong letter costs one of six lives.

The site links each game to the other two at the end of a round. It is a light pick for film fans who want something quicker than a full quiz.

How to play ScreenIdle

  1. Open screenidle.app and choose the poster game, the tagline game or Blank Buster.
  2. In the poster game, study the pixelated poster, then pick a film from the list or skip; the poster sharpens after each miss.
  3. In the tagline game, read the tagline and year and choose the film it belongs to.
  4. In Blank Buster, tap letters to fill the blanks in the title; each wrong letter costs one of six lives.
  5. Share your result and move on to the next game.

Tips

  • In the poster game, look at the overall colour scheme and the position of faces and title text before guessing.
  • Skipping costs a try just like a wrong answer, so take a reasonable guess when you have one.
  • Use the year in the tagline game to rule out remakes and sequels.
  • In Blank Buster, start with common letters such as E, A, T and S, and watch for short words like The.
