Rotato is a daily rotation puzzle. A grid of numbers is scrambled, and you turn 2x2 blocks a quarter-turn at a time until every number reads in order, left to right and top to bottom. Each puzzle has a par to beat, tiles turn green when in place, and hints point to a good next move.

About Rotato

Rotato belongs to the family of sequential-movement puzzles, where the answer is known and the challenge is finding the moves that reach it. The grid holds numbers in a scrambled order, and the goal is to put them in order, left to right and top to bottom.

Tap the centre where four tiles meet to rotate that 2x2 block a quarter-turn clockwise; tap twice or right-click to turn it counterclockwise. Tiles in the correct spot turn green. Each puzzle has a par, the move count to beat, and your move counter stays green while you are under it. A hint highlights the recommended next block without moving it or adding to your moves, though hints are counted in your shared result. You can also give up and end at your current position, and Settings offer other difficulty levels.

Rotato is one of the daily games on Greatest Games, a site of word and logic puzzles. A new puzzle goes up every day at midnight US Eastern, the same for everyone, and it plays free in the browser with no account or download. A free account opens the Rotato archive of every past puzzle by date.

How to play Rotato

  1. Open Rotato on greatest.games and look at the scrambled grid.
  2. Tap the centre of any 2x2 block to rotate it clockwise; tap twice to rotate it counterclockwise.
  3. Place the numbers in order from the top-left, watching tiles turn green.
  4. Keep an eye on your move count against par.
  5. Finish when every number reads in order.

Tips

  • Solve the top row first, then work down; fixing the last rows is easier with fewer tiles left.
  • Think in cycles: one rotation moves four tiles, so plan where each goes.
  • A counterclockwise turn equals three clockwise ones; use it to save moves.
  • Use a hint only when stuck; it does not cost moves but shows in your result.
