Cogs is The Telegraph's word puzzle with a twist, launched in late 2025. The grid is made of four-letter blocks, or cogs, and you rotate each one until the white squares read as words and phrases. The full daily grid is for Telegraph Puzzles subscribers; a free Mini Cogs is open to everyone.
About Cogs (The Telegraph)
Cogs arrived in the Telegraph Puzzles app in November 2025 and was announced as The Telegraph's brand new puzzle a few weeks later. The board is a grid of blocks, each holding four letters, and each block turns like a cog. Rotating a block moves its letters around, and only the white squares count: the puzzle is solved when every across and down run of white squares spells a word or phrase.
You can lock a block once you are sure of it, so it stops turning, check a block, a word or the whole grid, and reveal the answer if you are stuck. The game rewards working out a strategy and finishing quickly.
The full Cogs is part of the Telegraph Puzzles subscription, in the app and on the web. Since July 2026 a free Mini Cogs has been offered daily to all users, and it has its own site at cogs.gg. It suits anyone who likes letter puzzles with a physical feel, such as Typeshift or Waffle.

Tips
- Start with the corners: a corner block's letters belong to two words at once.
- Lock a block as soon as you are sure; it saves accidental turns.
- Short words are easier to spot; let them fix the blocks around the long ones.
