Tiled Words board with letter tiles spelling PIGEON and SQUIRREL beside a list of across and down clues

Tiled Words breaks a small crossword into pieces of two or three letters and scatters them over a grid. You read the clues, then drag and rotate the pieces until the words lock together again. Each day has a new themed puzzle, and older days are kept in an archive.

About Tiled Words

Tiled Words is a free browser puzzle that mixes a crossword with a jigsaw. The answers to a short themed crossword are cut into small tiles of one to three letters, and those tiles are scattered across an empty grid. Your job is to put the crossword back together.

The site credits the game to Paul and Lisa, and a banner on the home page says Tiled Words is joining Blue Ox Family Games. Besides the daily puzzle there are Past Puzzles, puzzles made by players, and a builder for making your own.

Each day's puzzle has a date and a title that hints at the theme, such as a set of animals or weather words. Beside the board is a list of across and down clues with letter counts. You drag tiles around and tap them to rotate, and when a full answer is lined up correctly its clue is ticked off. If a clue has you stuck, an eye button next to it can reveal help.

The interesting part is that the clues and the tiles help each other: a tile with an awkward letter pair can tell you which answer it belongs to, and a solved clue tells you where tiles must go. It suits crossword fans who want something shorter and more hands-on than a full grid.

How to play Tiled Words

  1. Open today's puzzle and read the theme title and the clue list.
  2. Drag a tile to move it on the grid.
  3. Tap or click a tile to rotate it so its letters face the right way.
  4. Join tiles so they spell the answer to a clue, across or down.
  5. Keep going until every clue is ticked and the crossword is rebuilt.

Tips

  • Start with the longest answer; its tiles are easier to spot among the pieces.
  • Look for tiles with unusual letter pairs, since they fit only a few words.
  • If the board gets crowded, use the shuffle option to spread the tiles out again.
