Crosswordle lays out a small crossword with all of its letters in the grid but in the wrong places. You swap pairs of letters, guided by green, yellow and grey tiles, until every word is right. A 7x7 puzzle and a larger 9x9 come out each day, with unlimited practice besides.

About Crosswordle

Crosswordle was created by Daniel Tait, who also made Mathler, by reusing code from an earlier crossword generator of his. He later sold his games to the studio Hey, Good Game, which runs Crosswordle today. Its current form is a daily logic puzzle about moving letters rather than guessing them.

Each puzzle is a grid of crossing words, 7x7 for the main daily and 9x9 for the bigger one. Every letter you need is already on the board, just scrambled. A green tile is in the right spot. A yellow tile belongs in that word but in a different position. A grey tile belongs in another word altogether. You tap one letter and then a second to swap them, and both update their colours straight away.

You have a fixed number of swaps, which varies from puzzle to puzzle. Each grid can be solved with six swaps still in hand, and those leftover swaps become your score, so finishing with all six earns six stars. Because nothing is hidden, the game is about planning: spotting which pairs of letters can both land in place with a single swap, and not wasting moves on tiles you are unsure of.

Crosswordle suits players who enjoy Waffle and want a bigger board, or crossword fans who like the idea of solving without clues. The 9x9 grid takes noticeably longer than the 7x7.

How to play Crosswordle

  1. Look over the grid of crossing words; all the letters are there but scrambled.
  2. Read the colours: green is in place, yellow belongs elsewhere in the same word, grey belongs in a different word.
  3. Tap a letter to select it, then tap another letter to swap the two.
  4. Keep swapping, watching the colours update after every move.
  5. Turn every tile green before your swaps run out; each swap left over at the end is worth a star, up to six.

Tips

  • Start with the word that already has the most green letters and work outward from it.
  • Look for swaps that put both letters in their final places at once; those are what keep your star count high.
  • A yellow tile where two words cross could belong to either word, so check both before you move it.
  • Use the letters you have left over to guess whole words before moving anything.
  • Save your swaps for letters you are sure of, and use unlimited practice to try riskier moves.
