Chaosword

Chaosword: the daily crossword trilogy

Chaosword publishes a trilogy of crosswords every day: a 5x5 Morning warmup, a 7x7 Evening grid and an 11x11 Midnight capstone. Each clue carries a stamp, Ink for a plain definition, Smudge for a sideways angle and Riot for wordplay, and clean solves earn a place on the leaderboard.

About Chaosword

Chaosword is a free daily crossword in three sizes. The Morning grid is a 5x5 mini, the Evening a 7x7 and the Midnight an 11x11, and the three are meant to be solved in order: later grids can echo answers from earlier ones, and on some days a clue points straight at a clue on an earlier board.

Every clue is stamped. Ink means a direct dictionary definition, Smudge a metaphor or a wry sideways angle, and Riot a pun or a piece of misdirection. Each day the date sets a row of dials that everyone shares: the symmetry of the grid, how many black squares it has, its outline, whether there is a hidden theme, whether answers include palindromes or reversals, whether the first letters of the across answers spell a bonus word, and how wild the clues are. The theme, if there is one, is revealed when you finish.

You can check letters, reveal answers, pause the clock, print the grid or play earlier days from the archive. Solves without reveals get a ranked score on the leaderboard. You can play as a guest with progress stored on the device, or sign in with an emailed link to keep streaks across devices. It suits solvers who finish the usual mini quickly and want a longer grid after it.

How to play Chaosword

  1. Open the Morning 5x5 grid and tap a square to start typing.
  2. Use the arrow keys to move, Space or Enter to switch between Across and Down, and Tab to jump to the next clue.
  3. Read each clue's stamp, Ink, Smudge or Riot, to judge how literally to take it.
  4. Use Check to mark wrong letters, or Reveal if you are stuck, though reveals keep you off the leaderboard.
  5. Move on to the Evening 7x7 and the Midnight 11x11 grids.

Tips

  • Solve the three grids in order; later clues often lean on earlier answers.
  • Start with the Ink clues, which are straight definitions, to get crossing letters for the Riots.
  • On days with a meta bonus, the first letters of the across answers spell a word.
