Astraware Crosswords comes from Astraware, a British studio that has made puzzle apps for many years, and has been on the App Store since 2012. It focuses on quick crosswords: straightforward definition clues in compact grids, solved on a phone or tablet keyboard.

The daily part is the Daily stream. New Daily puzzles appear every day (the App Store listing says two, the Astraware site says four), and the same puzzles go to every player so that times can be ranked on the global leaderboard. Each Friday a free Weekender crossword with a larger grid and some harder or cryptic clues is added for solving over the weekend.

Beyond the dailies there are offline puzzles in four grid sizes and three difficulty levels, extra puzzle streams and puzzle packs. Free players earn tokens and see ads; the optional Puzzles Plus subscription opens every Daily, Weekender and stream puzzle as soon as it is released, without ads.

It suits solvers who like a short British-style quick crossword with a race against the clock.

How to play Astraware Crosswords

1. Open the app and pick one of today's Daily crosswords.
2. Tap a clue or a square, then type answers with the on-screen keyboard.
3. Use hints or the solver if you are stuck, at the cost of your best time.
4. Finish the grid to post your time to the global leaderboard for that puzzle.

Tips

• Fill in the short answers first: they give letters for the longer ones.
• Save the Weekender for a slower session, as its clues are harder.
• Avoid hints if you want a good place on the leaderboard.
