Blockle is a daily mix of a block puzzle and a word puzzle. Letter tiles come joined into shapes, and you drag them into a square grid until every row reads as a word, with all the words sharing a theme. There is a new puzzle each day in three sizes, from 5x5 to 7x7.

About Blockle

Each Blockle puzzle gives you a square grid and a set of pieces made of joined letter tiles, a bit like the shapes in a block-fitting game. Your job is to drop every piece into the grid so that each horizontal row spells a word. The pieces already face the right way, so there is no rotating; the challenge is working out which shape goes where and which letters end up next to each other.

The words in a puzzle share a theme, which is the main clue to what you are building. On some days the puzzle is tied to an occasion, such as a pizza day or a cat day. If you are stuck you can use hints to reveal the theme, the position or letter of an empty tile, or where the first piece goes, and you can give up to see the solution. The game counts your moves and time.

There are daily puzzles in English at 5x5, 6x6 and 7x7, and a mode built on Chinese four-character idioms. The day follows your local date. Blockle is free in the browser, made by Ollie Woodman, and can be played with a mouse, by touch or with the keyboard. It suits players who like spatial puzzles as much as word ones.

How to play Blockle

  1. Choose today's puzzle size: 5x5, 6x6 or 7x7.
  2. Drag a letter piece into the grid, or use the spacebar to pick a piece and the arrow keys to move it.
  3. Fit every piece into the grid without rotating them.
  4. Arrange them so each horizontal row spells a word; all the words share a theme.
  5. Use a hint if you are stuck, then try the other sizes for the day.

Tips

  • Work out the theme early; it narrows down which words the rows can be.
  • Place the largest or oddest-shaped pieces first, since they fit in fewer spots.
  • Look for pieces whose letters only make sense at the start or end of a word.
  • Start with the 5x5 to get a feel for the day before moving to the larger grids.

Questions

Do I need to rotate the pieces?

No. Every piece is already in the right orientation; you only move them.

How many puzzles are there a day?

One in each English size, 5x5, 6x6 and 7x7, plus a Chinese idiom mode.

Are there hints?

Yes. You can reveal the theme, an empty tile's position or letter, or where the first piece goes, or give up to see the answer.

When do new puzzles appear?

When your local date changes at midnight.
