Crosswordle (crosswordle.org)

A 5x5 crossword with no clues, where every word is a small Wordle.

Every day: One hand-made 5x5 crossword a day, plus a larger 7x7, the same for every player, where each across and down word is solved by Wordle-style guessing. New puzzle: Midnight in your local time zone.

Crosswordle at crosswordle.org turns a small crossword into a set of linked Wordles. Pick any across or down entry and guess it, with as many tries as the word has letters; coloured tiles show what is right, and letters you find carry over into the words that cross them. A new 5x5 grid comes each day, with a 7x7 and an archive for more.

About Crosswordle (crosswordle.org)

This Crosswordle is a crossword without clues. The grid is a hand-built 5x5 crossword, and instead of reading a clue you solve each entry the way you would solve a Wordle: type a guess, then read the green, yellow and grey tiles. Each word gets as many tries as it has letters, so a five-letter entry allows five guesses and a three-letter one only three.

The crossing is what makes it more than several Wordles side by side. Once you find a letter in one word, it appears in green in every word that crosses that square, so a hard entry can be cracked from the easier ones around it. Clicking the selected tile switches between across and down. The puzzles are written by hand, some sent in by players, and the site asks submitters to keep to commonly known words and few two-letter entries.

Beside the daily 5x5 there is a daily 7x7 for a longer session, a puzzle archive where you can replay past grids and filter by whether you finished them, and statistics with a streak for each size. Settings add a timer, a pencil mode for noting guesses in the corners of squares, dark mode and a high-contrast mode. It is a different game from Crosswordle at crosswordle.com, where you swap scrambled letters instead of guessing. It suits Wordle players who want a puzzle with a bit more structure.

How to play Crosswordle (crosswordle.org)

  1. Click a row or column in the crossword to choose an across or down word.
  2. Type a guess of the right length and press Enter; each word allows as many guesses as it has letters.
  3. Read the tiles: green is the right letter in the right place, yellow is in the word but elsewhere.
  4. Use letters found in crossing words, which show in green, to solve the harder entries.
  5. Fill every word in the grid to finish, then try the 7x7 or the archive.

Tips

  • Start with the longest entries; they get the most guesses and give you letters for the short ones.
  • If you are stuck on a word, solve the words that cross it first.
  • Turn on pencil mode to note likely letters without spending a guess.
  • Short words get few tries, so leave them until their crossing letters are known.
