Squareword 1705: an empty 5x5 grid with a yellow column of clue boxes on the right and an on-screen keyboard below

Squareword is a free daily word puzzle where five hidden five-letter words are stacked into a square, so the columns spell words too. Every guess you type is tested against all five rows at once, and you try to fill the grid in as few guesses as possible.

About Squareword

Squareword describes itself as a daily word game in two dimensions. The hidden answer is a 5x5 square of letters in which every row and every column is a valid five-letter word. Each day has one numbered puzzle (puzzle 1705 at the start of October 2026), shared by every player, and older puzzles are in the archives.

You play by typing any five-letter word. Instead of being checked against one answer, it is checked against all five rows. Letters that sit in the right place in a row are filled into the grid, and letters that belong in a row but in a different spot are listed in a yellow column beside that row. The keyboard keeps track of the letters you have tried.

The aim is not just to finish but to finish in as few guesses as possible, so each guess has to do work across several rows at once. As the grid fills, the crossing columns become a second set of clues, which is where it starts to feel like a small crossword without clues.

The site is made by the developer behind ChangeWord, ClickWord, VideoPuzzle, SpaceWord and Estimatle, carries ads, and offers an optional login to sync stats. It suits Wordle players who want a longer puzzle with more deduction.

How to play Squareword

  1. Type any valid five-letter word and press Enter.
  2. Letters in the right spot of any row are filled into the grid.
  3. Letters that belong in a row but elsewhere show in the yellow column next to that row.
  4. Use the rows and the crossing columns to work out the remaining words, using as few guesses as you can.

Tips

  • Open with words full of common letters to light up as many rows as possible.
  • Read the columns as well as the rows: a half-filled column often has only one possible word.
  • Count your guesses: the score is how few you need, not how fast you are.
