Crosswordle on Minigame Mania, a crossword with vague category clues

Crosswordle on Minigame Mania is a daily crossword where every clue is just a category and a length, such as found in a kitchen (4). You check the board a limited number of times, and each letter turns green, yellow or red, so the crossings and the colours lead you to the answers.

About Crosswordle (Minigame Mania)

This Crosswordle is the word game on Minigame Mania, the small daily games site that also runs Screenplaydle, Pitchdle and Rushdle. It is a different game from the other puzzles called Crosswordle. Each day there is one grid, around seven squares across, the same for everyone.

The clues are deliberately loose: a category and a letter count, like something you can fold (6) or a unit of time (4). Many words fit any one clue, so the crossings decide which is right. Any real English word is accepted as an entry, which means you can probe a slot even when the category stumps you.

When you lock in, the whole board is checked at once, full or not. A right letter turns green and stays; a letter that belongs elsewhere in that word turns yellow; one that is not in the word turns red. A crossing square belongs to two words, so it is split diagonally with one verdict for each. If you change a letter its colour clears, but a bar above the keyboard keeps the yellows and reds for both clues under your cursor. The rules give you ten lock-ins, and you are scored on the share of words you solve.

It sits between a crossword and Wordle: there is little trivia in it, and most of the work is reasoning from the colours.

How to play Crosswordle (Minigame Mania)

  1. Open Crosswordle and read the category and letter count for each slot.
  2. Fill in any words that fit, using the crossings to choose between candidates.
  3. Lock in to check the board: green letters are right and stay, yellow ones belong elsewhere in that word, red ones are not in it.
  4. Use the colours and the clue bar above the keyboard to change your entries, then lock in again.
  5. Solve as many words as you can before your lock-ins run out.

Tips

  • Lock in early with a few confident words; the colours are worth more than a full but uncertain grid.
  • Probe a hard slot with a real word full of common letters to learn which ones it holds.
  • Crossing squares give two verdicts, so a letter that is green one way and yellow the other still tells you something.
