Picsey start screen: a 7x7 tile grid over the hidden photo with the clue Music and Musician, a best possible score of 100 and the keyboard

Picsey is a free daily picture trivia game. Each day's photo hides under a grid of 49 tiles, with a category and subcategory as clues, such as Music and Musician. You remove tiles to peek at parts of the picture and have three guesses to say what it is; fewer tiles and fewer guesses mean a higher score.

About Picsey

Picsey was launched in 2023 by John Lipsey, who loved Wordle and the NYT Spelling Bee but found that almost all daily puzzles were word or number games and none challenged his visual thinking. It describes itself as a test of your visual IQ, and a new Picsey goes live every day.

The board starts as a 7x7 grid of blank tiles over a photograph, with the category and subcategory drawn on top, for example Music and Musician. You click tiles one at a time to reveal parts of the picture, and type your guess on the on-screen keyboard. You have three guesses. A best possible score of 100 sits at the top and drops as you remove more tiles and use more guesses.

After the round you can see your stats and share your result. A game takes a couple of minutes, and no account is needed.

It suits visual thinkers and trivia fans who want a daily puzzle that is not about letters or numbers.

How to play Picsey

  1. Open picsey.io and read the day's category and subcategory.
  2. Click a tile to reveal part of the hidden photo.
  3. Type your guess; you have three tries.
  4. Reveal as few tiles as possible to keep your score high, then share it.

Tips

  • Start with tiles near the centre, where the subject of a photo usually sits.
  • Use the subcategory to narrow your guess before revealing more.
  • A wrong guess costs points, so reveal one more tile if you are unsure.
