Allegedly

Allegedly blind item No. 72: a story about two DUI arrests and a Venice jewellery store necklace with the celebrity's name blacked out

Allegedly is a daily guessing game dressed as a gossip column. Each edition is one blind item drawn from a documented celebrity scandal, with the name blacked out, and you have three strikes to say who it is. Each miss reveals a free clue, and after you solve it you can vote on whether the scandal is what that person will be remembered for.

About Allegedly

Allegedly lays out its puzzle like a page of newsprint: a numbered daily edition, a dateline and one blind item. The item tells a true story, taken from widely reported public-record events such as arrests, feuds and court cases, with the celebrity's name replaced by a black bar.

You type a name and guess. Three strikes are allowed, and every miss gives you a free clue. You can also unlock optional clues at any point, at the cost of having them printed on your share receipt. A hard mode gives only two strikes and no optional clues. After the case is closed, The Jury asks whether this is what the person will be remembered for and shows how other players voted.

There is more around the daily case. Each evening a Night Edition adds one harder case with two strikes and no optional clues. The Morgue holds past cases to reopen, and The Desks sort older items by beat, such as film, music, sport and TV, for practice that does not touch your streak. Your rap sheet keeps games played, win rate, streak and badges.

The site carries advertising. It suits people who follow celebrity news and remember the stories behind the headlines.

How to play Allegedly

  1. Open today's case and read the blind item.
  2. Type the name of the celebrity you think it describes and press Guess.
  3. Use the free clue each miss gives you; you have three strikes in all.
  4. After the case closes, take a side in The Jury and share your result if you like.

Tips

  • Dates and places in the item narrow things down fast: note the years before you guess.
  • Optional clues show up on your share receipt, so try a guess first if you want a clean score.
  • Turn on hard mode only once you know the format: it removes a strike and all optional clues.
