A Mathness puzzle in the app: target 95 (easy), five number tiles 10, 12, 5, 13 and 8, operator buttons and Submit

Mathness is a quick arithmetic puzzle in the spirit of the Countdown numbers round. You get a target and five numbers, and you build an expression with plus, minus, times and divide to hit the target or get close. The Daily is the same puzzle for everyone, one attempt only, with a leaderboard.

About Mathness

Each Mathness round shows a target, such as 63, and five starting numbers, such as 7, 8, 3, 9 and 12. You tap numbers and operators to build an expression, using each number at most once, with normal precedence and brackets. 7 times 9 makes 63 with two numbers; 7 + 8 x 3 + 9 also gets there, using more of them.

Scoring rewards more than the right answer. Points come from accuracy (an exact match earns a large bonus), speed, how many of the five numbers you used and how efficient your steps were, for up to 1,350 points a round. The Daily is one shared puzzle for every player with a single attempt, and it feeds daily, weekly and all-time leaderboards and a streak. Solo mode deals unlimited fresh puzzles, and Challenge sends a puzzle link to a friend for a duel on the same numbers.

It runs in the browser with no sign-up (pick a name and an avatar) and as apps for iPhone and Android, made by EOI Digital. It is free.

It suits fans of the Countdown numbers game and of daily arithmetic puzzles such as Mathdle and Abako.

Tips

  • Look for a pair that multiplies near the target, then adjust with the rest.
  • Using more of the five numbers scores better, so try to fold leftovers in with plus and minus.
  • Do not chase an exact match too long: speed counts too.
  • Practise in Solo mode before your one daily attempt.
