Hemiscope is the flagship game of the Hemiscope collection: one mystery country a day to find in eight guesses. Each guess tells you the distance and direction to the answer, along with comparisons of region, population, area, flag colours and whether it is landlocked.

About Hemiscope

Hemiscope, the game that gave the collection its name, is a daily country-guessing puzzle. Each numbered daily hides one country, the same for every player, built from a curated public dataset.

You type a country to guess. Each wrong guess shows how far away the answer is and in which direction, and compares your country with the mystery one on region, population, area, flag colours and whether it is landlocked. You have eight guesses, and you can give up to see the answer.

It is one of the daily games on Hemiscope, a free collection of short geography, history, logic and ranking puzzles that also includes Timeline, Vault, Ladder and Flip. Each game gets a new puzzle every midnight. You can play in the browser or in the free iPhone app, which adds live duels against friends, an endless Survival mode and explorers to collect with stars earned from the puzzles.

It suits players of Worldle and Countryle who like to combine a direction arrow with other country facts.

How to play Hemiscope

  1. Open hemiscope.com/hemiscope to see today's puzzle number.
  2. Type a country and guess.
  3. Read the distance, direction and the comparisons on region, population, area, flag colours and landlocked status.
  4. Use them to narrow your next guess.
  5. Find the country within eight guesses.

Tips

  • Open with a large central country for a useful first direction.
  • Use the landlocked and flag colour clues to rule out whole groups at once.
